Blake Kaz: Numb… Part 1

September 1, 2009 · 1 Comment

[Editor's Note: This is Part 1 of a short story I'm working on...]

Drink, drink, drink, drink… this was a familiar sound he thought. Just hours before his red eye back to Chicago, Blake Kaz was on his tenth round of what his newly-found airport buddies called numb. Aptly named, the point of the game was to drink until you could no longer feel your extremities.

Blake had what some poorly-educated passengers called “flight fright” or as he would call it… an inability to understand why anyone would want to strap themselves onto a 500-mile-an-hour metal tube that carries more diseases per square inch than the infirmary. To him, flying was a big con of his job, a job that had always been a detesting part of his life. Of course, pushing drugs for big pharma was a necessary evil, and luckily, it provided a justifiable cover for his real gig.

Until more recently, the long flights, lack of sleep and binge drinking to ease his nausea was just part of the job. Now, he found himself taking more flights, getting less sleep and pounding fifths of Jack even if he wasn’t flying. This pattern was getting to him. Had he lost his sanity? Was there anyway back from the depths that he had drank himself to? The answers were about to be made clear, whether he wanted them to or not.

Devils Tower Wyoming

August 10, 2009 · 3 Comments

Devils Tower Wyoming, originally uploaded by GregDawson.

On a recent road trip to Sturgis, my bromate and I put an afternoon aside to go see Devils Tower in Wyoming.

The name Devils Tower originated in 1875 during an expedition led by Col. Richard Irving Dodge when his interpreter misinterpreted the name to mean Bad God’s Tower. This was later shortened to the Devils Tower.

For my sister Terri:

“I am still determined to be cheerful and happy, in whatever situation I may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances.”

In the Moment

“Living In The Moment”

by Amber “V” Moonstone 8/31/08

Have you ever just let life move through you?
Just relishing in the moments of your life,
Letting go of control and abandon rigidness.

Have no expectations,
enjoy each moment for what it is,
surrender to feeling in the moment.

The first thing you need to do is,
to give yourself permission to let go.
Once you do this, all possibilites open up.

When letting go of our hold on ourselves,
it gives us the freedom and energy
to embrace all that is new and meaningful.

When you take a walk next time,
consciously feel each step on the ground,
smell the air, feel the wind and savor the moment.

Look at a tree and it’s amazing power
will fill you with energy to sustain your day,
filling you with strength and vision.

When you smell a flower,
really take in it’s scent,
realize just how simple and complex it is.

Walk along the shoreline,
just far enough away, so that the waves
can kiss your feet with healing magic.

Tenderly touch a pet,
feel their response,
know that you can give love.

Kiss your child,
and realize just what a miracle
they really are to you.

Look at your aging parents,
find time to be with them,
knowing that you may not have much time left.

Fill your world with positive thoughts,
Stand proud to be YOU,
and always remember to live in the moment.

Self Motivation Challenge

June 3, 2009 · 2 Comments

Veritable Quandary, originally uploaded by GregDawson.

“The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.” – Arthur C. Clarke

I read the above quote this morning and immediately jumped out of bed for a quick run, crunches and pushups.

I’ve had a litany of excuses since completely the 2007 Chicago Marathon, i.e. broken foot, I’m too busy, I’m too tired, I’ll work out next week, I just ran a marathon so I’m good for awhile, it’s Wednesday and I don’t workout on Wednesdays… literally, I could fill a book with all of my excuses.

My excuses haven’t just hurt my exercising, but also my work, hobbies, life, etc.

To combat this, I’m starting a 30-day self-motivation program. How and what?

Out of the several items I’ve been putting off, I’ve picked four of them to track, document and report on. Here they are:

1. Exercise and Nutrition
*Cut out some junk and workout more
**Commit to start training for a 1/2 marathon

2. Guitar
* Start guitar lessons again
** Learn “Guy with a Guitar” by Mishka

3. Photography
* Start taking more photos
** Join a photography club

4. Mobile Lifestyle
* Build on the projects that enable me to travel and work
** Finish www.cheap-screen-printing.com

With the right planning, I believe, all of this is attainable. I will see you on the flipside a leaner, meaner, more musically talented individual.
